Having seemed like a bit of a fad back in the 1980s, 3D has made a comeback - and how!
It just seems to be everywhere at the moment from our TVs and game systems right through to our cinemas. Well now it’s gone even further with the arrival of 3D slot games in our casinos.
But the 3D you’re likely to see online is very different from what you’ll see elsewhere.
The concept of 3D images is very similar - two images are put side by side so that the brain computes what your left and right eyes are seeing at the same and therefore computes ‘depth’ in what is essentially flat pictures.
However, the eye popping images that you’ll have seen while watching the likes of Avatar down your local cinema is known as Polarized 3D because it requires the viewer to wear special polarised glasses if they’re to experience the full effect.
While this is arguably the most impressive form of 3D, it’s also the most expensive and requires special projectors and screens in order to pull off the effect.
Due to this expense, the 3D you see on your TV screen is slightly different. This type of 3D is known as Active Shutter 3D and requires users to wear glasses which flick open and close each lens very quickly in time with the TV program that you’re watching.
First the right lens opens, then the left lens … but it all happens so quickly that you never notice it … and your brain is fooled again into thinking that it’s seeing two images at the same time.
However, what everybody is working towards is Glasses Free 3D whereby (you guessed it!!) glasses aren’t even needed to produce a 3D effect. Instead, users will simply be able to look at their TV or cinema screen and see the effect in front of them.
Nintendo have been the first to mass-market this type of technology with the launch of their 3DS, although it is possible to buy TVs which work in the same way … although they’re very expensive.
This technology requires another special type of screen, so it’s unlikely that we’ll see Glasses Free 3D on the internet any time soon, but if you get a chance to check it out, then do. It’s pretty damn cool!
When it comes to games on the internet, they’re not truly 3D yet - instead they just use well designed graphics that appear to have depth to them to produce a 3D effect.
However, later on in the year I would expect a number of Anaglyphic 3D slots to be launched. These games will require the use to wear a pair of glasses with a red lens and a green lens.
The image you’ll see on screen will be made up of red and green colours meaning that large parts of the image will get lost in one lens while appearing sharp in the other … and once again this will cause your brain to believe it’s seeing two images at once.
The first slot to have achieved this is Magical Forest which has been released at 888 casino. If you don’t have glasses, then you can play it in 2D, but it’s so much better in 3D … and anyway, with the help of the video below you can easily make your own pair of 3D glasses!
